Physical Education (PE)

Physical Education Programme of Intent for our Programme of Study

St Willibrord’s core school intent is woven into the fabric of our physical education curriculum, through teaching and learning. Through PE, our philosophy is to help support our pupils to develop independence, resilience and courage, alongside reaching their full potential with PE and sport.

Intent

Throughout foundation, key stage 1 and 2, we believe in a holistic approach to the teaching of physical education. Children are taught the fundamental movements (agility, balance and coordination) within a safe, stimulating and fun environment, whilst integrating crucial learning behaviours at every step. The aim is to help develop each and every child’s lifelong participation in active life as well as reaching their full potential, not only in sport and PE but as a valued member of society.

Implementation

In KS1 and KS2, we strip back sports to allow successful entry points for our pupils. We believe that every child should feel included and challenged across the whole curriculum. We achieve this by focusing on key fundamental skills: teaching, learning and progressing these skills, followed by applying them into fun and engaging games. We teach the National Curriculum, supported by a clear skills and knowledge progression. This ensures that skills and knowledge are progressive year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children. In addition, our curriculum allows for adaptable entry points depending on individual ability. Each unit is also underpinned by one of 6 multi-ability focus and learning journeys: personal, social, cognitive, creative, applying physical and health and fitness.

Currently our year 4 and 5 classes undertake weekly swimming lessons, in line with curriculum objects. These lessons, carried out for the full academic year, allow pupils to swim competently, confidently and proficiently, as well as performing safe self-rescue.
