RSE- Relationships, Sex and Health Wellbeing Curriculum

Relationships and Health & wellbeing form part of the broad and balanced PSHE curriculum)

Intent

To equip children with essential skills for life and to develop the whole child through lessons and experiences that develop the knowledge, skills and attributes children need to protect and enhance their wellbeing.  Learning children how to stay safe and healthy, build and maintain successful relationships encourages them to have   strong and positive views of themselves by allowing them to develop their individuality and self-esteem which promotes  confidence and resilience.

Implementation

The Relationship and sex Education SoW is Journey of Love (approved by Salford diocese) is discreetly taught in the summer term. The other areas of health and relationships, including mental and emotional health, keeping safe (including safety online) and healthy lifestyles are taught at set times over the year, following the IMatters curriculum and PSHE PoS. The full RSHE programme is also supported within the thematic units of Dimensions with dedicated cross-curricular weeks to promote healthy and safe lifestyles and relationships therefore, enabling the children to recall and build upon previous learning at a depth that is appropriate to the age and stage of the child.

Parents are also informed of how and why each delivers each area and are given suggested activities for home to extend their learning.

Each lesson begins with a discussion of children’s existing knowledge and experience, offering the chance for baseline evaluation. Each lesson ends with an opportunity to consolidate and reflect upon learning. Generic ‘I can statements’   for the end of Key Stage are provided for PSHE   allowing teachers to evaluate and assess progress.

Impact

Children are enabled to develop the language and self-confidence needed to clearly articulate their thoughts and feelings in an environment of trust and respect, and know when and how they can seek the support of others. This will have a positive impact on the whole child, including their academic development and progress, by alleviating any social and emotional barriers to learning while skilling them to evaluate and understand their own wellbeing.
